The Cottage Laws class is FREE to anyone interested in owning and operating a home based food business.  Owners of cottage businesses do have to obtain a Food Handlers certificate.  The Food Handlers course begins at 6:15 p.m. and is $20 –please pay by check or money order made payable to Lavaca Family and Community Health Committee –cash is not accepted.

Food Handlers certification is required of all people who work in a retail food establishment.  This certification must be obtained within the first 30 days of employment and is good for two years.  Retail food establishments include restaurants, grocery and convenience stores, institutional kitchens (schools, nursing homes, etc).
